How to see system services are enable or disable in ubuntu 11.04(Natty Narwhal)

what is chkconfig

Chkconfig is a utility to update and query runlevel information for system services.  Chkconfig manipulates the numerous symbolic links in /etc/init.d/, to relieve system administrators of some of the drudgery of manually editing the symbolic links.

In Debian, there are several tools with similar functionality, but users coming from other Linux distributions will find the tools in this package more familiar.

Go to Terminal and open it and type the command “chkconfig' press enter.

john@john:~$ chkconfig

The program 'chkconfig' is currently not installed.  You can install it by typing:

sudo apt-get install chkconfig

“If chkconfig is not intall you will see the  above massage”

to install “chkconfig”thpe this command “sudo apt-get install chkconfig”

john@john:~$ sudo apt-get install chkconfig

How to install Ubuntu restricted extras in Ubuntu11.04 (Natty Narwhal) commonly used applications with restricted copyright (mp3,avi,mpeg,True Type, java,Flash,Codecs)

This package depends on some commonly used packages in the Ubuntu multiverse repository.

Installing this package will pull in support for MP3 playback and decoding, support for various other audio formats (GStreamer plugins), Microsoft fonts, Java runtime environment, Flash plugin, LAME (to create compressed audio files), and DVD playback.

Please note that this does not install libdvdcss2, and will not let you play encrypted DVDs. For more information, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs

Please also note that packages from multiverse are restricted by copyright or legal issues in some countries. See http://www.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/licensing for more information.

To install this you have two way 1. Ubuntu Software Center 2. Through Terminal

For Installation Windows 7 here the step by step method

Setting up your computer and BIOS (Changes if Required)

When you start your computer put your Windows 7 DVD in DVD/CD drive. And Restart

In most cases it will automatically boot in to the Windows 7 installation.

But in some cases Boot device order has to change.

BIOS it may boot you’re running operating system. In that case you will need to change the BIOS. You change the BIOS setting to boot from CD/DVD instead boot from hard drive.

Installation of Windows 7 almost like Vista Installation type. But you have to care full read the descriptions in each time before clicking the NEXT button to avoid and disasters. There are options to choose in these steps you may find them with each images.

  6. Now you will see a box set a password for your account. Give a password and press NEXT button.
  7. Now you will see “help protect your computer and improve windows automatically” go for “use recommended setting” after that. Set your time zone and press NETX button. After that you have to select your computer’s current location and select one.
  8. That’s all you will see yours windows 7 desktop and enjoy.

How to install ubuntu 11.04

Put your CD on system DVD/CD drive and press enter. After few mints you will see a box called “welcomepress Install Ubuntu” button.

Now you will see “preparing to install ubuntu” box just press “forward” button

After that you will see “Allocate drive space” box in that you will see four options

First Command to Run After Installing Ubuntu

Ubuntu is a great operating system. It fast, secured and easy to use when compared to most of other operating Systems. But Ubuntu is not complete without some additional packages. One command make Ubuntu useful for everyday use.
To get started, press Ctrl – Alt – T on your keyboard to open Terminal.
When Terminal opens, type the command below and press Enter to install.
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
Programs that will get installed after running the above command are:
  • MP3, DVD Playback support
  • Microsoft Fonts
  • Java Runtime
  • Flash Player
  • and many codecs that are required to play MP3 and DVDs.
    (OR)

install Ubuntu restricted extras

Ubuntu by default, doesn’t allow you to play MP3, DVD, Flash or most media formats for legal reasons. You must always install additional programs that will allow you to play those media
To install Ubuntu restricted extras
go to Ubuntu Software Center from the application launcher. Then search for “Ubuntu Restricted Extras” and Install . It will install commonly used applications with restricted copyright (mp3,avi,mpeg,True Type, java,Flash,Codecs).

How do I clean Ubuntu?

Ubuntu software packaging system can accumulate unused packages or temporary files. These temporary files, also called caches, contain package files from all of the packages that you have ever installed. Eventually, this cache can grow quite large. Removing them allows you to reclaim space on your computer's hard drive for storing your documents, music, photographs, or other files.

To clear the cache you can use either the clean or the autoclean op for a command-line program caaled apt-get. The clean command will remove every single cached item, whicle the autoclean command only removes cached items that can no loger be downloaded (these items are often unnecessary).

To run clean go to Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal and Type

$ sudo apt-get clean

and it will ask password and give the password

packages can also become unused over tiem. If a package was installed to assist with running anogher program- and that program was subsequently removed-you no longer need the supporting package. You can remove it with autoremove

To run clean go to Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal and Type

$ sudo apt-get autoremove

it will remove the unnecessary packages.

How to Get Hardware Information On Ubuntu Using dmidecode

dmidecode is a tool for dumping a computer’s DMI (some say SMBIOS ) table contents in a human-readable format. This table contains a description of the system’s hardware components, as well as other useful pieces of information such as serial numbers and BIOS revision. Thanks to this table, you can retrieve this information without having to probe for the actual hardware. While this is a good point in terms of report speed and safeness, this also makes the presented information possibly unreliable.
The DMI table doesn’t only describe what the system is currently made of, it also can report the possible evolutions (such as the fastest supported CPU or the maximal amount of memory supported).
SMBIOS stands for System Management BIOS , while DMI stands for Desktop Management Interface. Both standards are tightly related and developed by the DMTF (Desktop Management Task Force).

How to Install Chrome 10 beta and How to read local Languages (Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil, Devanagari) news paper and other Languages in Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick)

Part 1 (How to install Chrome)

Google released the latest beta of Chrome, version 10, celebrating the move to double figures with some very interesting new features. Google has kept Chrome development at breakneck pace since the first beta released in September 2008.
According to a Google blog post, Chrome 10's new Crankshaft version of its V8 JavaScript engine now runs scripts some 66 percent faster than previous versions, as measured by theV8 benchmark suite. The new beta build also includes hardware-accelerated video, which Google says may cut CPU usage by as much as 80 percent when running full-screen, assisting performance generally and extending your battery life.
Google also revamped the settings interface, which now appears in a tab as opposed to a dialog box, an approach that reminds of Chrome OS running on Google's unbranded Cr-48 notebook. This also includes a search box, so if you're not sure where to find a particular option, just enter a related keyword, like "language," and Chrome will display anything related: font customizations, language and spell-checker settings, the Translate option, and more.
These aren't links to the settings, either; they're the same buttons, lists and checkboxes that users may have found when searching through the options themselves, making the options needing tweaks more immediately available. Clearly improving convenience and ease of use are priorities for this release.
Elsewhere, security improvements include a new mechanism for disabling outdated plugins -- that is by default. Should users choose to enable Chrome Sync then, by default, they now also get password synchronization across all their Chrome installations.
There's plenty to offer, then, and despite the beta tag the browser seemed fast and reliable in our initial tests. If you'd like to try it for yourself then the download is

Part 2 (How to install Telugu fount)

How to Install Telugu fount in Chrome 10 beta in ubuntu 10.10
if you wnat to read a telugu paper (eenadu and other) just install padam fount from this link

{Even though Indic scripts are supported through Unicode by modern platforms and browsers, many Indic websites still use the old non-Unicode font base encodings. Without those proprietary fonts installed in user's computer, those pages can not be rendered correctly.}
after installing fount you can read telugu paper now
